“What Is That Smell?” Inside MAST’s World of Niche Perfume & Desert-Inspired Fragrance

If there’s one thing we hear again and again, day after day, year after year, when someone walks into MAST, it’s this: “Oh… there’s a push sign right there.”
We laugh (because yes, it’s true), but just as often, there’s a second reaction that follows almost immediately: “It smells so good in here! What is that smell?”
And that’s where things get interesting.

The scent of MAST isn’t just one fragrance, it’s an immersive, layered blend of artisan perfumes, niche fragrances, and handcrafted incense.
It’s a constantly evolving sensory experience shaped by the independent brands we carry. Each scent tells its own story, but together they create something warm, inviting, and impossible to define. That’s the magic of a well-curated perfume house - it’s not about one note, it’s about atmosphere.
We’re especially proud to highlight two exceptional Tucson-based perfumers: La Curie and Fzotic. Both are known in the world of niche perfumery for creating complex, small-batch fragrances that feel transportive, artistic, and deeply personal. If you’re searching for unique perfumes or artisan scents you won’t find everywhere else, these are a beautiful place to begin.
And then there’s the incense - an essential part of the MAST experience.
Sonoran Rosie, created by Tucson maker Rosie Crocker, produces some of the most unforgettable handcrafted incense we’ve come across. These desert-inspired scents are rooted in foraging, nature, and community, bringing a sense of place into your home. It’s the kind of incense that lingers in the best way. Earthy, grounding, and quietly addictive. We travel with it, we gift it, and we always come back to it.
Just up the road in Phoenix, Tennen offers a completely different, yet complementary approach. Their Japanese-inspired incense blends minimalist design with desert influence, creating a clean, refined scent experience that feels both modern and timeless. It’s perfect for anyone drawn to meditative rituals, home fragrance, or intentional living.

As we continue to grow our collection of perfumes, incense, and home fragrances, we do so with intention.
Every brand we carry is carefully chosen, guided by our commitment to slow retail, independent makers, and products that genuinely resonate.
Some of our recent additions include Ayond, Carta, Kelly + Jones, Saint Rita Parlor, and MICA. Each brings a distinct perspective to artisan fragrance, ranging from botanical compositions to bold, contemporary scent profiles.
We’re also excited to welcome Buchart Colbert to our collection! Based in Tucson, this niche perfume house creates artistic, unisex fragrances rooted in mood and storytelling. Its debut line blends both familiar and unexpected notes, from earthy and smoky to soft and gourmand, resulting in scents that feel layered, expressive, and intriguingly unconventional.
So when you walk into MAST and ask, “What is that smell?” - the answer is simple:
It’s a curated blend of niche perfume, handcrafted incense, desert-inspired fragrance, and everything we love about thoughtful scent design.
