Leather Care: How to Maintain Handmade Leather Goods So They Last for Years
BAGS
Rotate your bag
Avoid contact with water, oil, beauty products, and open PENS!
Any light color leather is subject to dirt and dyes.
Dark indigo can easily rub off on light-colored bags and should be avoided when possible.
For light dirt marks, I like to use a white hi-polymer artist's eraser. On non-glazed leathers, you can usually use a nice beeswax water repellent that helps protect your bag.
ALWAYS test inside the bag first. Some leathers will darken with the application of leather treatments.
I like to use Skidmore’s Beeswax Waterproofing. Also, for sprays that work well on suedes and more delicate or glazed leathers without discoloring, you can try Bickmore’s Gard-More Water & Stain repellent. Also, Cadillac Shield seems to work well.
Bags with nut and screw brass hardware for strap attachment should all include extra hardware. Please contact us if you need any replacements, etc.
Maintenance is the best method for protecting your bag, in the end.
BELTS
The Feather Belts are cowhide and can be oiled with most leather creams or oils. The feather buckles are yellow or white bronze. They are removable, held on by studs. Turn them sideways to shimmy off the buckle and polish as desired.
The Stud Belts are cowhide latigo, which is typically used for horse tack. They do not have a “buckle” the studs themselves serve as the closure. Gently wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth to clean.
BOWS
Neck Bow maintenance mainly consists of how they are stored. Store flat or in the travel pillow box it came in. Leather will take the shape it’s left in, so, be gentle.
Gently wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth to clean. Never use an abrasive on the metallic leather.
